[December 2016]
Camped overnight in the ancient Mayan city of Tikal. Slept overnight in the jungle in hammocks with my best friend Ross and the most wonderful people one could meet whilst on the road; Kamila and Rachel from Canada, and Janus from Denmark. We ended up traveling for 5 weeks together and we still all remain close friends, despite the distance between our homes.
The city of Tikal itself is an ancient Mayan citadel in the rainforests of northern Guatemala. Possibly dating to the 1st century A.D., Tikal flourished between 200 and 850 A.D. and was later abandoned. Whilst the ruins were interesting, the highlight was no doubt the noise of the jungle during the early hours of the morning before sunrise. An experience that no-one tried to capture on their technology, just us sitting in silence, listening the unique experience of hearing the jungle awake.
